The problem you are having with gematria is an all to common one
amongst armchair cabalists and thelemites alike. It is, simply
stated, thus: You have firmly ensconced the horse in front of the
The key to gematria lies in starting with the basics, that is,
learning to walk before trying to win a cross country marathon.
Let me example it for you: The ten Holy Sephiroth are numbered 1
through 10, with the unmanifest Ain Soph Aur being 0. Another view
is for Kether to be 0 and Malkuth 9 (in my view more correct)as
alluded to with our Fool of the Tarot being 0, but the hebrew Aleph
being 1. (There is a very simple yet deep Mystery revealed in this
pertaining to All and Naught, but I digress.) Actually, being able
to mentally flip from one view to the next is the best advice I can
give concerning the reciprocity of 1 and 0.
Thus, each of the Sephiroth and the attributes reveal the deepest
meaning, and the purest, of each single integer 1 through 10 (or 0
From here we would then approach the AIQ BKR (The Cabala of Nine
Chambers), i.e.: "paste the sheets (of the tarot) from right to
left". Here we group the Hebrew letters (including the finals) of
the Paths as such: 1:10:100, 2:20:200, 3:30:300, etc. culminating in
9:90:900. These represent three levels, as it were, of the
emanations, formations and manifestations of each of the Holy
Sephiroth. Thus we could view the tripartite numbers as representing
the Trinity of the Ain Soph Aur flowing through each of the
Sephiroth, and represent this numerically as 111 for Kether etc.
Note that 666 = Tiphareth in this schema. These three levels could
be seen to represent the Aziluthic, Briatic and Yetziratic levels
prior to full on dense manifestation in Assiah (i.e. the Four
So now we can take a Hebrew word like, say, Messiah (anointed one).
It's value is 358. 300 repesents the Atziluthic or archetypal
essence of Binah as well as the letter Shin and the Tarot atu Aeon
or Judgement. 50 represents the Briatic essence of Geburah as well
as the letter Nun and the Tarot atu Death. 8 represents the
Yetziratic essence of Hod as well as the Hebrew letter Cheth and the
Tarot Atu the Chariot. Tne Hebrew Name Nachash, the serpent of Eden
also adds to 358. Thus we may see, through gematria, how that which
may be first thought to bind us may ultimately prove to be our
If you know your Cabala, all of these number associations will bear
fruit with but a few minutes contemplation. Also, you will see how
to build a ritual around this number 358, or for the serpent
Nachash, or to invoke the Messiah. If you don't know your Cabala,
then you will remain lost and confused.
Hope this helps.
