I am new to this list, so pardon me for jumping into this thread.
There are some cultures where dealing with demons/spirits is
considered "wrong", yet is practiced almost universally. The act of
consorting with demons is taboo. Breaking the taboo creates an
emotional response in the practitioner. This emotional response,
whether in the form of fear, guilt, or excitement, adds to the
intensity of the conjuring. In a sense, the psychological response to
doing something "bad" is converted into a fuel used to increase the
potency of a magical working.
