Something close has been done before, when anaerobic bacteria doomed most of
the atmospheric species then existent by converting the atmosphere en masse.
Even there, though, life continued. Life is buried miles beneath the earth.
We are wiping out many species and among those, we will probably ultimately
find ourselves. Humanity is a mass extinction event, but not the first.
Unfortunately, it can take diversity millions of years to return after such
