Venue OnStage 2/F Greenbelt 1, Ayala Center, Makati City Director Baby Barredo Synopsis Winner of nine major Tony Awards in 1965, "Fiddler on the Roof" remains one of the finest, most perpetually popular American musicals ever
produced - in fact, it is enjoying another hit revival in the West End. It tells the story of a family attempting to live a normal life filled with Jewish traditions in the small village of Anatevka, Russia, 1905. Tevye, a dairyman, is searching for appropriate husbands for his three eldest daughters - Tzeital, Hodel and Chava. In a break of tradition, his daughters refuse to accept the wishes of the matchmaker, Yente, and their father. Instead, they marry men that they love. Meanwhile, Russians are instigating terrible pogroms against the Jewish people in Russia. In the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia, the Jews of Anatevka are forced to leave their homes and Tevye is determined to start a better life in a new land. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, “Fiddler On The Roof” has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and honesty. It's universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class,
nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. Featuring some of the most memorable songs in musical history, including Tradition, Matchmaker and the unforgettable If I Were A Rich Man.
“FIDDLER ON THE ROOF” has all the elements of good family entertainment – familiar music; a beautiful story filled with love, humor and a bit of sadness, and a lot of lively dances and production numbers. Even children will find it entertaining. Without question, "Fiddler" will be a hot ticket in town, as it should be.
As Rep turns 40 this year, “Fiddler” is a fitting celebration of its rich tradition and promising future. In a defining statement made by the milkman, Tevye, at the end of the first song, he says: "Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof!"
