Subject: Professor John O'Neill
You will be saddened to learn that John O'Neill, Professor Emeritus
of New Testament Language, Literature and Theology, died
peacefully early on Sunday, 30 March.
John served the University of Edinburgh with great commitment
from 1985 to 1996, after years of teaching and research at
Cambridge. He embraced an impressive breadth of scholarly
interests, and his publications ranged widely in New Testament
studies and Church History. His major publication during his
Edinburgh years was probably _The Bible's Authority: A Portrait
Gallery of Thinkers from Lessing to Bultmann_ (1991), an elegantly
written collection of essays on German biblical scholarship that
combined his New Testament and historical scholarship.
As a colleague, he was a man of profound Christian commitment,
deep integrity and abiding humanity. He was a gentleman in the
best sense of the term, a man whose constant concern was for the
well-being of others, and who radiated a quiet warmth to all whose
lives he touched. He served as member of the New College
Senate, as Convener of our Visiting Lectureships Committee, and
as member of a number of Faculty committees. He was also
highly respected for his service on several senior University
committees. Perhaps his greatest contributions, however, were
as Curator of the New College Library and Convener of the New
College Library Committee. He loved the library and worked hard
to preserve and enhance its collection.
John is survived by his wife, Judith, and their three daughters. Our
thoughts and prayers are with them.
We understand that the funeral will be held on Tuesday, 8 April, at
Greyfriar's Church, but further information will follow.
S Jay Brown
