No reason. Or maybe the edges were taken off the square wave by capacitance
in the cable.
The basic problem is that frequency counters will respond to harmonics,
especially when overloaded.
Never trust instruments unless you are absolutely confident with them. Even
then I bet there are many professionals with stories of how they have been
misled by their favourite test instrument.
