SOA Watch Updates and Actions
Protests fill the streets of New York City during the
Republican National Convention
On Sunday, August 29, SOA Watch activists from around
the country joined 500,000 people in the streets of
New York City in an energetic and colorful display of
resistance to the policies of the Bush administration!
Many SOA Watchers marched with large signs and banners
demanding the closure of the SOA/WHINSEC.
On Monday, August 30, SOA Watch activists marched with
thousands in two poor people's marches: the Still We
Rise Coalition March and Rally and the Poor People's
Economic Human Rights Campaign March for Our Lives.
On Tuesday, August 31, as part of the Day of Direct
Action, more than one thousand activists marched in
protest of the School of the Americas/WHINSEC and the
ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Within minutes
of beginning the march from Ground Zero and following
police orders to march two by two on the sidewalk, 300
of the marchers were illegally arrested by police.
Those marchers not arrested in the initial sweep
continued processing north to just a few blocks from
Madison Square Garden, where 54 activists conducted a
"die-in" on Broadway and were arrested.
As of Thursday afternoon,September 2, hundreds of
activists are still being held in NYC Central Booking
facility. Fifty-five of these activists are on a
hunger strike demanding the release of all RNC related
arrests. Nearly 48 hours after arrest, these activists
have not been allowed to see lawyers or go before a
judge. Check back for more updates.
