First, apologies for the cross post.
A friend of mine, a fellow Scouter and VFW member, just dropped by
my desk here and put a copy of the April 2001 VFW magazine on it. Front
cover has two Eagles and the cover title "SCOUTING: Instilling Values in
Young Men". Inside is a nice article explaining the history of the Boy
Scouts of America, giving account of the many national-level services
rendered by the BSA over its history, cites the sterling open-door policy of
Scouting, praises the Supreme Court decision and the courage of the BSA to
stand up for the rights of all private organizations, and recounts how
Scouts have gone on to render valuable service to the USA in the military.
It quotes a Louis Harris poll that found "that 95% of U.S. parents want the
Scouting program and its values for their children."
In a sidebar "VFW & BSA" it says:
"In 1929, VFW began awarding annual scholarships to outstanding
Eagle Scouts who showed 'marked patriotism and love of country, outstanding
scholarship, and consistent application in daily life of the ideals and
principles of the Boy Scouts.'
"That original Eagle Scout recognition program lapsed in 1960, but a
new version will be launched this year...
"Beginning with the Community Service Conference in April, a
deserving Eagle Scout will be presented with a $5,000 scholarship..."
I don't know the details about applying for the scholarship, but I'd
be willing to bet that you could check with your local VFW post, or maybe
