Thanks for helping me with my experiment to offer my first story free until Monday. You don’t need a Kindle to download the story. There’s a free Kindle app for PCs, Macs, and various devices such as iphones and ipads. Download those here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000493771
I promised to report my data, so here it is so far:
I had 105 downloads in the first 24 hours. I don’t know how this compares to other people’s results, but it is a heck of a lot more than my sales for the month! This was by “advertising” only via Twitter and Facebook and this list. I added another list last night, and got 30 more downloads so far today. No new reviews, but no bad ones, either!
The downloads didn’t impact my author rankings at all, but I also sold 3 of my other stories, and that DID help my rankings, especially in the SF subcategory. But even with 135 downloads, it didn’t make the top 100 free. I figure those must get thousands, maybe even millions of downloads. At least I know that 135 isn’t enough.
Fireworks in Orbit, the free story, moved up to number 2 in the list of titles that come up on Amazon when you search on my name, just under my most popular book, Space Station Science (that’s my first book, the one that won the Golden Kite). So those search rankings are not by traffic, though they don’t seem to be completely by sales either since I sold an equal number of another story and it is listed as number 14, below a story that hasn’t sold any copies this month. <shrug>
Ah well, all data is good—I do love to experiment!
Thanks for sharing the link and please let people borrow it, too. Here is the link again: http://www.amazon.com/Fireworks-in-Orbit-ebook/dp/B00589OQ3K/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1356588615&sr=1-6&keywords=Marianne+Dyson.
I’m hoping to add a set of articles I did about my ride on NASA’s Vomit Comet to the Kindle sometime tonight to give those just finding me another item that might perk their interest.
On with the test!
