Oh, that's easy. :) We used to have competitions in my old Shire
for newcomers to see if they could pronounced my whole SCA name -
Aryanhwy Prytydes merch Catmael Caermyrdin. Welsh is good for that.
With the adventure of the English, the English name pool really
pretty much took over and wiped out the native Welsh names previously
in use (with some exceptions, of course), and also the names that
did remain tended to be spelled in a more English fashion than a
Welsh one. So if he likes the idea of funnily-spelled and
unpronouncable, go early period. (My name in Old Welsh, as
opposed to Medieval Welsh, is Argantgui merch Catmaili). A good
