I am from Artemesia as well, and our Kingdom has usually prefered
handmade items as much as possible. Largesse for Pennsic is a chance
for our Royalty to show off just how amazing the artisians in our
kingdom are to a larger audience.
As several people have mentioned, largesse can be any item you choose
to donate to help ease the burden from our crown of providing a large
number of gift baskets for other kingdoms, but the past few sitting
Royalties have encouraged the items to be donated more from the hands
and heart and not so much from the pocketbook.
After sitting on a number of consecutive retinues (lady-in-waiting to
several Queens in a row) some of the items I've seen donated in
largesse have included handmade jewelry, beads, trim or cording,
candles, bath salts, rose water, fabric bags, fabric itself, small
decorative boxes, books, handmade cards and personalized stationary.
One Estrella a lady painted other kingdoms devices on paper and made
little pennants for each kingdom.
If you choose to make something edible (or drinkable) it is extremely
important to put on the container what it is, when it was packaged,
as well as the ingredients. On past retinues if this information was
not listed we had to dispose of the item because of the Queen's
severe allergies. It's nice as a general rule (at least in Artemesia
they liked it) for you to put your name and kingdom on any handmade
items you donate, so they know who made the wonderful item in the
basket. For those who were shy we had generic "made by the hands of
the Artemesian populace" stickers, but we always tried to give credit
to the creator where we could.
Really it is entirely up to you if you want to donate and what you
want to donate. It is just a nice way to help out so that no one
person (or Royal) has to shoulder the cost of largesse by themselves.
Many hands make for light weight!
