I must start by admitting that I am new to this group. However, I
have an idea which I think may make for an incredible roguelike. Has
anyone ever read Roadside Picnic? You can get it for free (legally)
if you search online for a translation. It's about 1 of 6 areas that
has been hit by an alien encounter, leaving a large area contaminated
by aliens. "Artifacts", objects that defy physics through some
anomaly, are fetching a high price, but it's illegal to go into the
zone. "Stalkers" enter the zone, risking their lives, to retrieve
these artifacts. It's what the game stalker (www.stalker-game.com) is
based on. What about a roguelike that took place in The Zone?
My ideas thus far:
Factions to align with:
-Military: They won't let you in the zone unless you join them.
Unless you are a member, you will be KOS in the zone
-TSA: The Stalker Alliance. Will help against military
-Scientists: Pay good money for artifacts, sometimes exchanges
*Skills improved through practice
*improvised melee (any object can be used for melee)
*Pushing objects and knocking objects over
*Targeting system for projectile weapons
*Intimidation (push someone around until they give in or retaliate)
semi auto, machine gun, heavy machine gun, rifle, melee, hand to hand,
stealth, pickpocketing, engineer, doctor, lock picking, weapon
matinence, survival, and more
--Recently deceased zombies are dead humans that immediately came back
--Bone bags are automaton bone covered in muscle and skin. There is
barely a central nervous system, no eyes, and no reason
*more to come
Description: In the zone, electromagnetic energy tends to build up
within any large hills or massive objects that are within 50 feet or
so of one another. The stalker's rule of thumb is to always keep at
least 100 feet clear on either your left or right side
Indicators: when dangerously close to one of Zeus's toys, you will
probably (and I stress probably) feel all of the hair on your body
stand on end. Get away as quickly as possible; it is ready to strike
you with electricity! At less dangerous distances (I say "less
dangerous" because the word "safe" does not exist in the zone) you
will feel a strange tingling on your scalp. More perceptive stalkers
may notice some of their artifacts humming softly or acting strangely
in other ways.
Effects: Upon getting too close to one of Zeus's toys, a bolt of
electricity will strike the highest point of the organism invading
it's area. Usually, this means your head, which contains your brain.
So don't fuck around. Typical effects include uncontrollable spasms,
unconciousness, brain damage, fractured teeth (from spasming of the
jaw), loss of bowel control, and death.
--The Devil's Bush (aka Satan's Pubes)
Description: A red fluffy material tends to grow on metallic objects
in the zone. Seemingly harmless, this fuzz will corrode any metallic
or organic material that comes in contact with it, causing said
material to hiss black smoke from its surface.
Indicators: Grows on metallic objects such as antennae, manhole
Description: near invisible anomaly which bends light. Satisfies its
hunger by twisting and contorting its organic victims dry, then
discarding what remains. Harmless when feasting.
--Mosquito Mange (graviconcentrate phenomenon)
Description: A gravitational anomaly that draws all matter to it.
Indicators: Small items on your body will feel like they're being
tugged. Circular areas of clearing. Feeling like you're being
pulled. Dropped items rolling along the ground on their own.
Effects: Get caught in one and there will be nothing left to bury.
Description: Blue colloidial gas that gives a rubbery consistency to
any organic, metal, or plastic material it touches. Slowly spreads on
body. Amputation necessary to prevent death. Usually docile, but
flares up on occasion.
Description: intense "hot spots" in the zone which burns anything
Description: slip in and there will be nothing left.
I don't have much more than that. What do you all think?
