EL PASO -- A new poll out today indicates that Gov. Rick Perry might be in for the fight of his political life in the upcoming Republican gubernatorial primary.
Public Policy Polling out of Raleigh, N.C., asked 797 likely Republican voters in Texas, "If the Republican candidates for Governor were Kay Bailey Hutchison and Rick Perry, who would you vote for?"
Fifty-six percent of those responding said they'd vote for Hutchison and 31 percent said they'd vote to re-elect Perry. Thirteen percent were undecided.
That means even if Perry won over all the undecided voters polled and the margin of error were taken into account, he'd still trail Hutchison in this poll.
The poll was conducted by telephone between Feburary 18 and 20. The survey's margin of error is +/- 3%.
The poll was not funded by either campaign, according to pollsters: "We did it internally, no body asked us to do it," said Dean Debnam of Public Policy Research.
