South Africa leads the world in executives' savvy about stakeholders, a
survey of 26 countries by Walker Information Global Network (WIGN) shows. It
found over a third of executives of major corporations were not familiar
with the term stakeholder as a management concept - "Somewhat surprising",
WIGN founder and CE Steven Walker says, "considering the impact this
approach is likely to have on profits in the 21st century". This is not the
case in SA. The term is most recognised in SA, followed by Canada and the
US. It's less recognised in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.
Canada ranks just behind SA in taking shareholders' opinions and attitudes
into account. Stakeholders include customers, shareholders, employees,
regulatory agencies and government bodies, suppliers and communities served
by the company.
Marl Harris, director and political analyst for Markinor, a WIGN member,
says: "In SA, the emphasis on stakeholders is constantly reinforced by our
new president, Thabo Mbeki, who has a deep personal interest in this concept
and frequently uses the terms in his speeches."
