I tried your route last year, building my own site and and trying to figure it all out and paying for every little addition that I couldn't understand. I was about to give up, then I found Zenfolio. Zenfolio has everything that I was looking for right there. They are easy to set up and navigate through. Their premium package only costs $100 a year. With that you can set your own prices for your photos and have unlimited space for your photos. For your customers, it is easy for them to look through your photos, pick out what they want and order from them directly and mpix fills the orders and ship them right to your customers address. You don't have to figure out how to put a shopping cart, ecommerce, etc... that is all set up for you. Just last month they provided new updates for their site to improve your website. They did a great job. One thing that really stands out about Zenfolio is their customer support. They are second to none. They always answer your questions and help you out until you are satisfied.
I too, had my own domain name made when I first started before Zenfolio. With them, you can point that name to your website with them and use your name on the pages instead of Zenfolio's.
I am sure you would be happy with Zenfolio. You can try out their site for free for two weeks and have complete use of all their options. If you or anyone decide to go with them, you can use my referral code and get $5.00 off your subscription. It is:
If you or anyone has questions, if I can help, I would be more than happy to try to. Also, Zenfolio has a Facebook Page. Alot of help can be found there.
My site is: http://www.rfsphoto.com/
