The last time I had to solve a problem like that I went about it from
1) I wrote an agent that "checked in" when the server was rebooted and
sent any updates that it had to a management server. The agent actually
went against registry settings and got its information from there as
well as running various CLI commands and parsing their output.
2) I had a service that ran (written in Perl) that allowed the the
management server to poll it to gather information as needed to update
the central management database.
I have no experience with WMI so I can't comment about that.
We also leveraged the service I wrote to do other neat stuff like
download virus signature updates from a centralized server.
