The perl itself is written in C, after all. It is not impossible (nor is
it uncommon, especially for things like hashes and regexps) for a
program written natively in C having a slow function for which perl has
a fast and highly optimized built-in (written in C, of course). It is
often just a question of which C code is faster, the one used inside
some C program, or the one used inside perl.
