Thank you for this link - I enjoyed reading the entry. I had had no idea
Mary of Modena was so young when she married, nor that she had had so
many miscarriages or short-lived children. One does wonder if James had
had some form of sexually transmitted disease which was passed on (I
have recently read a biography of Mrs Beeton, where her similar
situation - a string of failed pregnancies followed eventually by
healthy ones - was put down to her husband's syphilis). Poor woman! And
having to cope with her husband being hustled out of his kingdom and
then enduring operations for cancer.
