I'm a fellow Mac OS X user of PCGen. Can you be more specific or
descriptive of what trouble you're having?
In general, here's what you need to do to insure a successful install of
1) download the latest ZIP-format PCGen file.
2) use the Terminal utility to open a command-line window, and navigate to
the directory where you want to unzip the PCGen file.
3) use the command-line "unzip" command to unzip the zipped PCGen file. If
you don't have an "unzip" command, you need to install the "extra tools"
CD (or whatever it's called, I can't remember at the moment). Among other
things, it will install some Unix command-line tools including "unzip".
[Do *not* just double-click on the ZIP file using the graphical user
interface to unzip it. Long file names and path names will be truncated,
resulting in a messed-up installation.]
After that, you just run PCGen the same way you would on any other
platform. Either double-click on the pcgen.jar file using the graphical
user interface, or from the command-line window type "java -jar pcgen.jar"
(in the directory where you unzipped PCGen). The latter method is very
useful for seeing diagnostic and error messages that are otherwise not
It's Java, so the look and feel of the program is pretty much the same as
on Windows or any other platform. Obviously there are some differences
(especially in "save as" dialogs, etc.), but for the most part it's the
To output a character sheet, you choose file -> export, then choose
whether to export to HTML or PDF, then choose specifically which output
sheet to use. Then you specify the file name to save the output as (e.g.
"Bob.html" or "Fred.pdf"). Then you should be able to view that character
sheet using either your favorite browser (e.g. Safari) for HTML files, or
the Adobe Acrobat reader for PDF files.
