Last week Peace Corps Director Gaddi Vasquez traveled to Southeast
Asia to evaluate damage to the region. While in Thailand Director
Vasquez visited Bangkok, Nai Yang Beach where the damage is still
evident, the Andaman Coast of southern Thailand north to Phang Nga,
and the Ranong Provinces. He also evaluated Haad Sai Khao, a fishing
village hit hard by the tsunami and a potential location for the
Crisis Corps volunteer efforts. Following the Thailand assessment,
Director Vasquez traveled to Sri Lanka and met with officials to
discuss whether Crisis Corps volunteers could assist with rebuilding
Crisis Corps' Program and Operations Specialist is finalizing position
descriptions with partner organizations, securing housing, selecting a
Crisis Corps Coordinator and coordinating project proposals for
approval from the Thai Government. We anticipate the first input of
position descriptions to be approved soon and are aiming for an
initial volunteer input in early to mid-March.
Crisis Corps has received an unprecedented response from the RPCV
community and we know that many of you are eager to assist with the
recovery efforts. At this point, at least for the first wave of
volunteers, it is becoming evident that proficiency in the Thai
language will be a mandatory qualification. This may change with the
secondary inputs and we will certainly keep all applicants informed
via these status updates. However, we want to be able to create a
clear picture for applicants in regards to potential placement.
In addition to our recruitment for Thailand projects, Crisis Corps
continues to meet worldwide programming needs. Currently we have
positions open in Cameroon, Jamaica, and Zambia with anticipated
openings in Latin America and other African countries opening over the

Our assessment of Sri Lanka is still underway and we should have more
information on the feasibility of establishing a program there in the
