- New Update -- very sad From: Stephen

Sun Nov 26, 2006 8:23 pm (PST)Evening Grupo,
It appears that things are very bad in Oaxaca City at this time. I
doubt the expresssion, "it was the best of times, it was the worst of
times" is applicable to the present situtation. Most, if not all, of
the news coming out of Oaxaca City is very bad.
I am getting many, many, updates about Oaxaca City every hour from
news sources all over the world. Several of our Group members
actually live in Oaxaca City, like Stan, Geri, Kanna, and Alan. In
general terms, it appears more people are disappearing, tear gas has
been heavily used in the center of the city, and many buildings, both
public and private, have been damaged by fire. The fire bombing of
government buildings and of many, many vehicles has been heavily
reported by news services today.
We, like our Grupo friends in Oaxaca City, are very saddened by such
violence to a city we have frequently visited, loved much, and often
It is doubtful that this pathway of violence will generate positive
outcomes for the majority of its citizens; indeed, only much sadness
and grief, frequently for those already very much dis-empowered.
Good Evening Poppy and Grupo, I apologize for the delay in replying to your inquiry. We have been dealing with an extended family medical emergency which appears to be going well at this time.We live in southern Wisconsin, USA, but plan on retiring in about a year and moving to southern Mexico. We plan to "survey" three or four cities the first "short" winter (February 1st, 2008 thru May 2008) and then try to live in one of them the next winter. We have traveled to Mexico, Costa Rica, Greece, and Italy, but are NOT extensive travelers, YET .I get news from paid subscriptions to various web sites and by "farming" the next using Google alerts and Yahoo alerts. I also talk to people who travel to other countries frequently, including our son and other relatives. Most importantly, this Yahoo Grupo (and others I manage) have many members who actually live in Mexico or have visited frequently for business and/or pleasure. Sometimes I receive more private and/direct e-mails from them regarding circumstances.HOWEVER, this is a site for tourists and only stays "on the surface" for the most part. I look forward to actually living in the country and learning some of the language soon and perhaps taking things to a slightly deeper level one day.Two members of this Grupo are Stan Gotlieb and Diana Ricci (who found each other and married in Oaxaca City, I think), and they publish a newsletter which I find stimulating. You can read about it at -- http://www.realoaxaca.com/newsample.htmlI also subscribe to "MexicoConnect" and follow the fourms of expats living all over Mexico. In addition, I monitor many other forums and boards on an almost daily basis. Finally, people like Alan Goodwin and Geri Anderson who live in Oaxaca City do what they can to help us sometimes understand the reality of a city that we all usual just dream about .Thanks for your interest and please feel free to contribute to this Grupo when you can.
