Netscape browser slims down, opens up Preview of Netscape 6 is
smaller than rivals and reflects commitment to standards and
integration. It took a little over two years, but the world can
finally see the fruits of Netscape Communications Corp.'s entry
into open-source software with the preview release of Netscape 6
and with it, perhaps, a renewal of the browser wars.
While many assume that the browser wars are over, the new
Netscape browser will have a good chance to reverse the company's
fortunes, -- and not just because of Microsoft Corp.'s legal
problems. PC Week Labs found the preview of Netscape 6 to be many
things that Microsoft's Internet Explorer isn't: small vs.
bloated, open vs. proprietary, offering support for standards
rather than trying to co-opt them.
