An Evening of Duodji - Sami Handicraft
Thursday, May 27, 7 p.m.
Suggested donation: $5
Duodji describes many types of Sami handicraft, from silversmithing and
knifemaking, to sewing, embroidery, and fashion design, to woodworking,
including boat and sled making.
At this lecture and workshop, Eva Skals will provide an introduction to
Sami culture and duodji. Gry Fors, a professional duojar and duodji
teacher, will then make coffee-pouches and accessories from dehaired and
tanned reindeer leather. Lightweight and easy to pack, leather pouches
and bags had a range of historical uses and today are mostly used for
packing coffee for going outdoors. The audience will be welcome to
experiment with the materials.
This program is supported by the American Scandinavian Foundation.
