Now celebrating its 12th season of touching the hearts of Black women
worldwide, African American Women on Tour, the preeminent empower-
ment conference for Black women, will take place October 11 - 13 in
Philadelphia, PA at the King of Prussia Holiday Inn. This year's event
is sponsored by Procter & Gamble and presented by Merck, and will
feature best-selling author and cultural critic, bell hooks with the
release of her new book, "Communion: The Female Search for Love,"
on Friday, Oct. 11; actress Vanessa Bell Calloway, who keynotes on
Saturday, Oct. 12; and the Reverent June Juliet Gatlin, "the woman of
prophetic vision, inspiration and song," who keynotes at the closing
luncheon on Sunday, Oct. 13.
Other conference highlights & features include:
++ Performances by spoken word artists: Iya Isoke from Harrisburg,
PA during Friday’s opening session; and In The Company of Poets,
Philadelphia’s first female spoken word ensemble, who will perform
on Saturday, Oct. 12.
++ This 3-day "reunion of sisters" offers a variety of powerful work-
shops, keynote presentations and forums, as well as Rites of
Passage programs for boys and girls, co-hosted by Black Family
++ Back by popular demand is the Women's Wellness Forum,
presented by Merck & Co., Inc. and co-sponsored by Abbott Labs
and Agouron Pharmaceuticals. Facilitated by Sara Lomax-Reese,
the publisher of newly released The State of Black Health Resource
Guide, the forum addresses pro-active health and lifestyle choices
and offers attendees the opportunity to dialogue with physicians
and holistic practitioners, including Queen Afua, author of "Sacred
Woman: A Guide to Healing the Feminine Body, Mind and Spirit."
++ AAWOT also features the popular "Sisterfriends Forever Pajama
Party," hosted by Pizza Hut, where conference attendees, dressed
in their "jammies" and teddy bear slippers, bond and dance until their
hearts are content.
++ African American Women on Tour will again sponsor its gently-
worn career clothing drive, Sojourner's Closet, and will donate clothing
to local women's shelters in Philadelphia.
++ Recognizing the need to increase awareness of the prevalence of
abuse and violence against Black women and girls, AAWOT will
continue its communal Healing Circles, presented by KLEENEX
Facial Tissue, and facilitated by Queen Mutima Imani.
++ Black Issues Book Review will host "Prose with a Purpose: A
Writer's Workshop," facilitated by Stephanie Stokes Oliver, author
of "Daily Cornbread: 365 Secrets for a Healthy Mind, Body and Spirit."
++ FleetBoston Financial will present a workshop designed to
strengthen women's understanding of the significance of building a
solid banking relationship and taking the necessary steps to gain
financial stability. Michelle Taylor-Jones, director of emerging
markets at Fleet will present this session, entitled "Women and
Money: Owning Your Economic Power."
++ Nordstrom's will host a fashion trends presentation at its King
of Prussia store as part of the conference.
This month, African American Women on Tour is launching its
online Village Marketplace Boutique, featuring AAWOT commem-
orative items, such as greeting cards, tee shirts, journals and
