I remember a publication we put out a few years back, describing a disease
called "Birdsong Fever". No, not the bird watching frenzy afflicting us
all, but a real disease caused from filthy feeders. Specifically,
salmonella bacteria grows quite well in feeder trays that allows birds to
walk in, and thus defecate in, their feed. Also, wet and rotting seeds can
harbor a plethora of bacteria, some which may be harmful if not fatal to
birds. A quick rinse, soaking in clorine bleach should sanitize things
easily. That might clear up your friends problem.
