I am going to have to ardently disagree with this point. The purpose of casting a Ritual Circle is not to "keep things out". It is the exact opposite. It's to "keep things in", so to speak.First of all, when we are casting a Ritual Circle, it's really not a circle at all. It's really more like a sphere; the "circle" is just where this sphere happens to touch the ground we are standing on. Energies, like us, are three-dimensional.The reason we cast a Ritual Circle is to create Sacred Space.....that magickal place outside of the normal flow of time and space. We are defining our own grounds, our own Temple. In this Sacred Space, we create the kinds of energies that appropriate for the workings that we are attempting to do (notice I did not resort to the misguided terms of "good" and "bad"). Once those energies are raised and infused with intent, they are released out of the Circle to do their thing.....to go towards their magickal destination.I suppose that a side benefit of casting Ritual Circle would be to keep "unwanted" or unuseful energies from mingling with the energies we are raising. So in that respect, the Circle is "protective".But people who are always going on and on about how we cast a Circle for protection from "evil" entities, "bad" spirits, "negative" energies, "The Unborn", "ghosts", and a myriad of other ridiculous examples, simply do not know what they are talking about, or are highly misinformed or naive about how energies work.Energy is neither good nor bad. We, as Pagans, should never believe in things that are ultimately good or bad. Leave that god vs. devil crap to the Christians. Energies are simply ueful or not to certain situations.....appropriate or inappropriate.I'll give a couple of examples. When you think about anger, most people feel this emotion is "bad". But is it really? Or is it just useful to some situations and inappropriate to others? Isn't the sense of injustice you feel when somebody does something wrong to you or someone in your family a totally viable and correct feeling? And how about love? Most people feel that this emotion is "good". But is it always? Haven't people fallen in love with the wrong person, or allowed love to control them?Don't ever make the mistake of feeling that energies are "bad" or "negative". They just might not be useful for your situation. And instead of being tempted to "banish" these energies, simply be respectful and return them to the earth to a source where they will be needed and appropriate.Blessed Be,Talitha DragonflyP.S.Ooooh!
