Welcome to Chad, John, and Karl. I just signed up Chad because he was
sent the "pending" message that you get if you try to subscribe to the
list cold. I just noticed John and Karl are on the list while I was
approving Chad. How did you guys get on without my receiving a notice
that you had subscribed? I guess it's just one of Yahoo's little
mysteries; the site has been pretty erratic in delivering mail lately.
So to open conversation, here's a suggestion for a heuristic, though
maybe not such a hot one. Kick it hard and see for yourselves. In a
game with a well-integrated theme, you can sometimes tell yourself a
story about what is going on in the game, then use your real-world
knowledge and reasoning skills to discover new strategies and tactics.
Obviously, this can only take you so far, and it's completely
worthless in a game like Zertz, which has no theme, but games like
Civilization seem tailor-made for this heuristic. (I'm just naming
Civilization off the top of my head as a game with a "story", but I've
never played it, so I could be way off in this instance.)
What do you think? What other heuristics do you use to reveal new
stratagems to yourself?
