It was great fun seeing these old stories done up in a fresh way. And I'm
glad if new generations become familiar with them,
because they resonate
throughout all of western literature.
And what a relief! They didn't
flog us gays with the old Sodom story.
They chose the more intelligent view
on it, that Sodom was a violent city infamous for doing violence to strangers,
and that Lot,
standing at the gate, saw the strangers arrive and tried to
protect them from the mob.
And I loved the poisonous look Sarah gave
Abraham as she clutched her son, fresh from his escape from sacrifice, as if to
"You sure that's God you're hearing, and not just a voice in your crazy
head, old man?"
