you don't need to compile external programs (other
than the wireless tools and the pcmcia stuff which
should be packaged for your distribution)
everything is in the kernel
just enable pcmcia in the general setup area
and enable the hermes support in network devices:
wireless lan section.
i dont know what 188.8.131.52.
if it is 2.4.2 rev 2 from a package of some kind you
should download 2.4.13 from ftp.kernel.org
if it is 2.4.12 then you are probably fine
