You did not say which modem your machine has and to us it will not be
obvious since there is not just one modem used in all Dell laptops.. In
some distros, the programs will claim to have properly identified the
modem, and to have set it up, in reality it has not. So, start by
identifying your modem and see if it is compatible with smartlink
I had this problem with Kanotix Live CD. It wasn't even close to running
my Conexant HSF modem.
