First off, a happy new year to all.
Secondly, I just spend the past few days upgrading, and then fresh
installing, Mandrake 9,0 on my Inspiron 8100 and am having a few
problems I was wondering if anyone else has experienced:
1) Both KDE nad Gnome lock the laptop up occasionally. Also happens
with OpenOffice Writer as well, although that may be a different
problem relating to the particular document I was working on. I'll
just be doing something and the computer will lock up tighter than my
father-in-laws liquor cabinet on Xmas eve (long story...)
2) devfs problem again - whenever I'm inserting a pcmcia disk (compact
flash or pcmcia ide drive) the cards are recognized, but then I get a
msg about not binding to parent -17 or something like that (sorry, I
don't have the logs since I'm in Windows, but if you've seen the
problem you'll know what I'm talking about). drakeupdate_fstab hogs
cpu cycles, the fans go nuts and basically I have to reboot to bring
some sanity to the situation. This occurs with pcmcia support compiled
into the kernel, as well as when I use the pcmcia-cs package. If I
boot with devfs=nomount, everything works tickety-boo. I know Mandrake
had a similar problem in 8.1, but it worked fine for me then.
3) In KDE (and maybe Gnome, I don't recall), whenever you highlight a
URL, a dialog pops up in the lower righthand screen asking you what
you want to do with the URL. Does anyone know how to kill this before
I put my fist thru the screen?
