AWARD-WINNING VOCAL SEXTET "TAKE 6" PERFORMS AT UCI

The seven-time Grammy Award-winning vocal sextet Take 6 share their
musical message of joy and harmony in a special one-night-only
performance at the Irvine Barclay Theatre, Fri., Feb. 2 at 8 pm.
Take 6 will also present a master class in the African-American a
cappella vocal tradition, Fri., Feb. 2 at 2 pm in Winifred Smith Hall
on the UCI campus. The master class is free and open to the public.
The sextet's appearance at UCI is presented by the UCI Chancellor's
Distinguished Fellows Program and the UCI Department of Music.
Since their 1988 double Grammy Award-winning debut album, Take 6's a
cappella synthesis of gospel, jazz, doo-wop and R&B has been often
imitated but never matched. Over the years, Take 6 has won seven
Grammys out of 15 nominations, eight Dove Awards, and has topped
Downbeat Magazine's readers' and critics' poll as Best Jazz Vocal
Group for seven straight years.
The sextet has recorded and/or performed with an impressive array of
talent, including Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Ray
Charles, Al Jarreau, Don Henley, James Taylor, Patti Austin, Randy
Travis, Branford Marsalis and BeBe & CeCe Winans. They've appeared
on film soundtracks to Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing," John
Singleton's "Boyz In The Hood", and Warren Beatty's "Dick Tracy."
