As you know doubt recall, Kern County has earned recognition as
America's Birdiest INLAND County for eight consecutive years
(2004-2011). Neighboring Los Angeles County has earned OVERALL
America's Birdiest County recognition in recent years. However, the
future of the America's Birdiest national event is not yet clear.
In recognition of the preceding, Alison Sheehey suggested a 2012 KERN
COUNTY BIG BIRDING WEEKEND in lieu of an America's Birdiest effort,
or as providing the bird list for an America's Birdiest event if one
is organized for 2012.
Alison's idea and name is very attractive. Therefore, using the prior
America's Birdiest guidelines of a 72 consecutive hour time period
during which anyone may submit one or more lists of bird species
detected anywhere in Kern County, the 2012 KERN COUNTY BIG BIRDING
WEEKEND has been set for 4pm, Thursday, May 3 through 4pm, Sunday, May 6.
The intent of this email is to get the idea and dates out to
potential participants so calendars can be tentatively marked at a
minimum. Further information will be sent out as things further crystallize.
Questions and "It sure would be nice if..." or "If..." comments are
welcome from now through the May 3-6 Kern County Big Birding Weekend.
Direct communications to the coordinator: bbarnes@...
Barnes). Thank you.
Happy & Productive Birding,
Bob Barnes, Ridgecrest, Kern County, California
