Kaye's New UPDATED 6 Hour Quilt Pattern
These updated techniques for the 6 Hour Quilt, our most popular pattern ever, include input fromviewers who have made this quilt. It also includes new directions for a "Tag Along Buddy Quilt", which is a small quilt with a satin binding for the toddler who needs a special quilt to tag along with mom and a new baby.
Also included are directions for making this quilt in more sizes, from small to double-quilt size.
This is still the perfect quilt for a child, a grandchild or a charity quilt.
It can be dragged around, washed and dried, cuddled up, and wrapped around.
Tips and Humor From Kaye....
Kaye meets many people and sees many things while she travels. She always comes back with a couple of humorous stories to tell. Here is one of them.
Life Starts to Revolve Around TVOne January, I slipped on the ice and broke my ankle and tore the ligaments. My first thought was, "Thank goodness we finished taping the series last week."
My first TV experience was in 1977. I taught some machine embroidery tips for five weeks on a local talk show. The hot lights dried out the cotton thread, and it started to fray and break. A quick solution was needed. We had to keep moisture in the thread, so we wet the whole spool. It worked great, but I watched water drip down the machine as I was sewing. Surprisingly enough, the machine continued to sew and nothing blew up.
As I cut pieces on TV, somehow I have to get rid of the unneeded fabric. A good friend of mine throws her fabric over her shoulder to get rid of it. I just push it on to the floor. But, pretty soon the pile of fabric pieces on the floor gets to be pretty deep. That can become a problem when I'm hard wired (my microphone is attached to a long cord). When I move from the sewing area to the pressing or cutting area, you can imagine how the microphone cord loops above and below the pile of fabric pieces, which makes the cord shorter and shorter.
On one show the floor director crawled under the table and began to clear some of it out. Since he continually gave me a hard time (without reason...), I just shifted my weight and came down on his hand,. He started hitting my leg, thinking that I didn't know I was on his hand. And during all of this, I just continued to cut, press and talk to all of you.
Like any other TV star, don't you think I should have a star on my dressing room door? You have to realize that most of the time the dressing room is also the bathroom. After whining to the same floor director about the star, I got to the studio only to find a small gold stick-on star (like they put on your papers in kindergarten) on the door. See, whining sometimes pays off.
I have a signal I give to my director that means "take a close up of something, because what I need next, I just dropped on the floor."

Q and A With Kaye....
Jean asks about a machine for just quilting. No embroidery stitches needed, just needle threader, thread cutter, drop feed dogs, 1/4" foot.
Kaye: My preference would be the Janome 6500. It's a good price and has the features you've mentioned.
Joyce: When you have squares and you want to put them together on point to complete your quilt, is there a formula on how big to cut your triangles to fill in, to make the quilt even? My squares are 14.5".
Kaye: Complete instructions are in the book, Everyone Can Quilt, here:
http://www.kayewood.com/item/Everyone_Can_Quilt_Book/281 but here's a condensed version:
Cut right triangles with the long side at 15", and sew to each outside edge. This works with any dimensions, just add 1/2" to the size of your squares. The Everyone Can Quilt book is an excellent reference for beginners and advanced quilters.
Tess: What kind of stabilizer is 2 sided hand press-able stabilizer to do landscape scenes.
Kaye: Steam-a-Seam works wonderfully for this. We have it here:

More Denim Trivia....
Plain weave denim is also called one-up-one-down weave.
Right-hand twill produces a diagonal line that rises from the lower left to the upper right.
Ring/OE results in a softer denim.
Ring-Ring is when the lengthwise and filling yarns are woven together.
Ring-Spun is when the yarns are twisted which makes them stronger.
Roving is fiber, drafted into smaller and finer form.
Selvage is a small woven edge that is parallel to the warp. This prevents raveling.
Sliver is a cotton fiber that is untwisted, loose and soft.
A Slub is a short yarn imperfection.
Staple is lengths of fiber before they are twisted and spun into yarn.
Tear, when pulled, this is a piece of the fabric's horizontal strength.
Tensile, when pulled, this is a piece of the fabric's vertical strength.
Warp is a yarn that runs lengthwise and parallel to the selvage.
Weight of denim can be woven into many weights, from four to over fourteen ounces.
Denim can be dyed in almost any shade imaginable. We tend to think of it as blue.
