Hello All Fellow John Adams Fan club members!
We seem like a small club- few in numbers. I laughed when I stumbled
upon the fan club. I was looking for some motherly advice from Abigal
Adams to her sons. You see, I am a mother of 3 boys. A young mother
at that. (My oldest is 8 and youngest is 3.) And I worry about my
children, like any parent does. But I am so envious of the times
past, where kids could play and be kids. (go fishing, swimming in the
watering hole, help and work along side their parents.) And where
values and morals were a given... importance. Where parents didn't
have to compete with TV and movies and Pop cultures competing with
educating our children.
I know, some might think I put TOO much responsibility on the media
and I should "filter the media that comes in my home". But I do. My
children, really only get to watch one show a day. But they go to
friends homes, they play with kids who have unlimited access and pick
up phrases, sayings, mannerisms, from their peers. And where I CAN
pick who their playmates are after school... I cannont control their
peer groups IN school.
And the homeschoolers philosophy is to pull them out of school. so
that the parents can be the complete influence in their childs life.
But I struggle with that too. I want them to develop coping skills,
be able to deal with different people with different ideas.
But if all the "attentive" parents in the world- pulled out their
children to homeschool. What does that leave? Does this action help
society on the whole?
I send this out.. to the 4 members of this club...
not really expecting any answers... just letting you know what your
newest member is a little bit about.
I guess i am curious to know, how has reading about John Adams has
motivated or inspired you to be a better person.
I know for me.. I am motivated to think less of myself and my
circumstances and daily try to find small ways that I can help my
someone else. I guess I hope that an act of kindness might trigger
more acts of kindness and ultimately make my world a better place.
