Yokohama Bay Stars reliever Sasaki, 31, is going go the free agent route in
an attempt to catch on with a major league team. Sasaki says that the
Orioles, Braves, Dodgers and Diamondbacks have expressed interest in looking
at him (personally, I can't see the Dodgers, who have Jeff Shaw, and the
Braves, who will be getting back Kerry Lightenberg next season and already
have John Rocker, really being that sincere). If he fails to obtain a spot
in a major league bullpen, he may decide to remain with the Bay Stars,
saying that he really isn't inclined to look at other Japanese teams. Sasaki
makes nearly $5 million with Yokohama, but I doubt that he will get that
from any major league team. Nevertheless, since it is apparently a dream of
his to pitch against big league batters, he just might take a big paycut to
do it (though no doubt any contract will be heavily incentive laden).
