Still kicking at 40 years on the job
While most workers enjoy the day off today--the country's 110th national
Labor Day--Steve Spanos will report to his job as a server at the Cape Cod
Room as he has for the last 45 years.
In a country where most people change jobs every four years, Spanos is a
minority. Less than one tenth of a percent of all salaried employees--a
mere 151,000 workers nationwide--have kept the same employer for at least
45 years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
George Ferro, 72, on the job 43 years as a garbage man
A vegetarian since 1960, Ferro credits his work as a garbage man with
keeping him in shape. He doesn't have high blood pressure or cholesterol.
He contends working keeps him alive.
