World Health Day 2013
– 7th April - ‘High Blood Pressure’
Community Medicine – Bharati Vidyapeeth(DU) Medical College, Pune launched an
awareness campaign on ‘high blood pressure’ from 1st – 7th
April 2013 for the general public residing in Dhankawadi, staff of Rajiv Gandhi
Institute of Biotechnology and Katraj Dairy.
Community Medicine along with student coordinators – Salomi Singh, Sara Rashid,
Nemisha Velchamy and Shubhika Sachdeva organized a free health checkup camp.
People found to be having blood pressure on the higher side and not taking
treatment were advised follow up, dietary and life style changes. Dr.P.D. Pore
and Dr.S.S.Sagare (Assoc.Profs. Dept of Community Medicine) designed a proforma
to assess knowledge and awareness of the people about various facets of
volunteers of VI semester created awareness on the global burden of high blood
pressure, its risk factors, signs and symptoms, treatment, complications and most
importantly - preventive measures of hypertension by displaying posters in public
places like cafes, banks , BSNL office as well as some clinics across Pune

prepared by the students was aired during the health checkup to educate the
people about various aspects of high blood pressure. Dr(Mrs.)J.S.Gothankar (Assoc.Prof.
Dept of Community Medicine) discussed the magnitude of the problem in the
community and primary prevention of hypertension, while Dr. Kavita Krishna
(Prof. Dept of Medicine) educated the public about signs and symptoms,
diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure in the video.The entire activity was guided by Dr. Aarti Pokale( Asst. Lecturer Dept. of Community Medicine).
