Fwd: Adhoc Committee, Boycott Of American MeatHeads ...
We would like to share with you what our adhoc group's thoughts are
on the boycott of american establishments as we won't be able to attend
the meeting today. The adhoc group is a group of individuals working
on a boycott of a US major burger outlet in Hong kong and through
forging alliances with other groups, across the world.
Our proposal is to target ONE american company. We believe that a
general boycott of american goods may just be too general that the
pinch will not be FELT- what is a couple of % drop in profits for
multi-nationals already making billions of US dollars a year? But if
we all unite and concentrate our efforts on tearing down ONE major US
corporation, that is quite something else - it sends a dangerous and
powerful warning to American hegemony and it is the American domination
and unilaterlism that is a major threat to the current world order.
Let's face it: the US threat to world peace will not stop even if they
were to end to the current invasion of Iraq now. The US will continue
to be able to do what their whims and interests take them so long as
their perceived (and actual) power that the US has on the world
economy, their weapons of mass destruction and their sense of being
INVINCIBLE continue. It is time to show them and ourselves that their
power comes from the consumer dollar! That's why we urge that the
boycott should continue well beyond the end of the US invasion (however
long that invasion lasts) and the boycott will continue and as our goal
of dismantling the targetted company is achieved, we will embark on
tearing down another.
The reason why we have chosen burgers as our target relates to the VERY
fact that eating beef has MAJOR implications on fossil fuel consumption
(a pound of burger beef alone requires one gallon of fossil fuel,
enough fuel to probably take you from Central to Tuen Mun in a car and
each burger contains at least 1/4 pound of beef)- the real reason
behind the present aggression against Iraq and many of the acts of
terrorism by the US that we witness the world over. If we really face
it, burgers are alien to our culture - we do have better local and
culturally appropriate foods. Boycotting burgers is something that we
ALL can do and the process can be empowering and its viability is for
everyone to see.
We understand that many people may be worried about the impact of a
targetted boycott on local (un)employment - but that can be said of
other anti-war actions including ending the armament race, the sales of
small arms, etc - people involved in the weapons industry will be put
out of their jobs for sure. But that shouldn't deter us from doing
what shoudl be done. We should all face our fear - it is this FEAR of
losing what we have that is tightening the stranglehold that the US
globalised power has on the world over. If we really care about the
workers who will lose their jobs as a result, we should think of
ALTERNATIVES too. That way, justice is served for the victims of war
and and violence workers in "affected" industries.
The boycott of a major hamburger outlet in Hong Kong presents us with a
unique opportunity to reclaim our CULTURE, our CONTROL over our economy
and show the United States of Aggression where the real seat of power
is. The adhoc group have already plans for community organising that
will aim to set up alternatives to eating hamburgers and working for
multi-national corporations - once the targetted outlet is put out of
business, we will help workers to set up co-ops or community kitchens
or whatever the community needs to regain control over our culture and
lives - the actual LOCAL ALTERNATIVE will depend on the needs of the
community (including the affected workers) where the targetted branch
is. More details will be forthcoming. What is required now is
CREATIVITY and not subservience to the existing globalised economic
order. We strongly recommend the article "The Empire is not
you have not yet read it. The article outlines the opportunities
created and taken up by people where american companies are driven out
or pulled out.
With regard to human resources, we have pulled enough resources amongst
ourselves to hire at least one full time person (or two part timers) to
METHODICALLY find out the needs of the community in each targetted area
(which lead them to buy from the burger network), do the community
organising and target the burger outlet branch by branch. But we will
still need scores of volunteers to make the campaign a success.
