So I wanted to add something to your comment:

This is certainly true if we give a "big look" to all the
forms of ancient gnosticism. Specific groups were quite
eager to develop doctrine and rituals.
I wonder which of the gnostic sects promoted a set of
symbols and practices that would be most compatible with
modern Western civilization.
There might be a very different sect that would be
compatible with Buddism. I had neglected to mention
Buddism in my recent post.
My brother, who is studying buddism in Japan, would
certainly reprimand me.
