The Manual of Discipline comes from a Jewish sectarian group that
seems to have called themselves the "Yahad". Some believe these
Yahad may have been the Essenes, but that is speculation. They do,
however, have more in common with the Essenes than Gnostics, and
this text does not generally exhibit any of the destinctive
attributes of any Gnostic sect.
