An updated preview of formsPlayer version 1.4 is available (188.8.131.521). It
fully implements XForms 1.0 Second Edition, and since there are some subtle
changes you might want to test any forms that you have, prior to the full
release of 1.4 which is imminent.
There are a number of bug fixes and new features, which we will document
shortly. The main change is the method of installation.
You can get this version simply by navigating to the following page:
It depends on your IE security settings what exactly you will see. If
security restrictions are high, you will see a dialog box asking for
confirmation that you want to install formsPlayer. (If you have Windows XP
SP2 then you will see this in the form of the infamous information bar.) If
your security settings are lower, or you have indicated to trust our
web-site or certificates from x-port.net, then you may not see anything, and
formsPlayer will simply start installing.
(Note that the actual installation itself is silent, and no user
registration is required.)
If you want to start experimenting with this method of installation for your
own forms, you'll see from the source code of the form above that you need
to add the @codebase attribute to the object tag in your form. The attribute
should be set to point to the CAB file on our server, and it should also
indicate the version number that your form needs. Every time your form is
accessed a check will be made for the specified version of formsPlayer, and
if it is not found the installation sequence will begin. (If the version
number of the installed player is sufficient, then no network activity takes
This should work very smoothly for your users, requiring at most one
confirmation on one dialog box (unless the have XP SP2, which will require
two). It means that you can now simply distribute a form or a link to a
form, knowing that your users can be using the form within minutes, even if
they don't have fP installed in advance.
LICENSEES AND 'NO TOUCH' INSTALLATION
For those who have a license to distribute formsPlayer, we will be making
available an additional facility whereby the CAB files can be signed with
your own certificates. This will mean that anyone who trusts your company's
certificates--such as your intranet-users or customers--can have formsPlayer
installed completely silently, greatly improving the user experience.
