Sadly, there are not a lot of films that I want to see this summer. But this artsy-fartsy film was one on my list of films to see.
the Cast: Michelle Krusiec (Wil): Her natural acting and lack of a sense of forced lines wonderfully formed an enjoyable performance. Joan Chen (Wil's mother): She was very funny whether in a scene by herself or with others. I enjoyed the simple though very heartfelt transition of her character at the end of the film. Lynn Chen (Vivian): She portrayed her character as dominating, I found it to be unattractive. Yet I understood the seductiveness and overall enjoyability of the character. My torn thoughts on the character aside, I liked Lynn Chen's performance. Ato Essandoh (Jay): He brought to the film a nice comedic relief and I found his changes throughout the film to be fun to watch.
the Plot: When her mother moves into her apartment, Wil, a doctor, finds out about her mother's pregnancy. Her mother does not tell anyone the identity of the father of her baby. Wil falls in love with a dancer, Vivian, and hides her romantic relationship from her mother. Wil tries to help her mother find a new man.
Fave Scenes: Vivian teaches Wil how to fall and tries to kiss Wil, who ends up falling whenever Vivian gets close. I thought it was a cute scene of early romance jitters.
Wil and her mother have dinner with Jay. It was an amusing culture clash as Wil and her mother spoke in Chinese about Jay. The montage of the men who go on dates with Wil's mother. This is a cliche film scene but it did not seem rusty in this film, it was funny.
Overall Impression: I think the portrayal of Wil's uneasiness with showing affection for Vivian in public was overdone. I would rather see more clicking between them than bickering. However I do think there were some lovely romantic scenes between them. I liked how not only Wil's mother rejected accepting Wil as a gay woman but also Wil's grandfather rejected Wil's mother because of her baby. Both the mother and daughter went through similar situations, I appreciated that. I think the comedy was very well done in this film. There were many laugh out loud moments. The film is like dark chocolate. It is not too sweet but deliciously satisfying overall.
Final Score: *** 1/2 / *****
