Martha and I arrived at the clinic 20 minutes early and they whisked us right in. Yay! No waiting. Although we ended up being there over two hours, it was all productively spent-- examination/labs/ etc, because she was gone over thoroughly.
They all agreed that she has deteriorated tremendously in the past two months. She looks scruffy, ratty, balding, and was definitely not her usual feisty self. She was quiet, and pretty much let them do whatever they wanted to her, with only an occasional token growl. This broke my heart and, in itself, caused concern because everybody knows "how Martha is," you can hear her coming across the building.
I refused to let them take her away from me today and made them bring their equipment out of the hospital part and into the consulting room. It was
inconvenient but I know it helped her be calm. I am so grateful that they allowed this and I know it meant a lot to Martha.
He confirmed my dx of peripheral neuropathy, but we have to wait at least till Thursday for the lab results because of the holiday tomorrow. Other than diabetes, some of the other possibilities are not so treatable, for example the suspicion of possible tumor on her spine and other degenerative or inflammatory conditions. But he is leaning towards diabetes. She has been flirting with it for a long time now.
In addition to HCM she has a Grade I/VI systolic heart murmur PMI sternal. But her lungs were clear. Her muscles are wasting away. She has alopecia on arms and legs where she licks excessively. She has lost over half a pound -- which caused them concern, especially since she usually has a ravenous appetite. She has not eaten today except what I coaxed by hand upon our return home.
The bottom line at this moment is we
won't really know how to proceed until we get the labs back. Did full panel, T4 and Fructosamine.
The saddest part of the visit today was broaching the subject of possible euthanasia. This has never, ever been a topic of conversation until today. Only two weeks ago, the vet said he had never seen any indications that we should be thinking along those lines. But Martha has gone downhill fast. They did say they would come to our home if we need them to. Considering they are an hour away, I especially appreciate that offer.
My prayer now is that the diagnosis will be uncovered when we talk on Thursday, and that it will be fixable! And that we will have many more months, even years, together. The vet tech looked at Martha with tears and said, Martha! You've got to get well, Martha! Martha and I are so very close, she has been a tremendous friend and loving companion and I cannot even imagine living without her. But you folks know all these feelings, so I'll close now and try to get some food into her.
She still needs the day's meds.
Thank you SO much for all the prayers and good wishes! I kept reading them on my iPhone as i sat there today and they meant a lot to me.
