Several letters to Voegelin appear in the new colle ction of Heilman letter, Robert B. Heilman: His Life in Letters, but these have already appeared in Robert B. Heilman and Eric Voegelin: A Friendship in Letters, 1944-1984.
The selection of letters in this volume runs to almost 800 pages; Heilman was a prolific letter writer! The letters provide an excellent picture of Heilman's great gifts as an academic administrator and his commitment to standards of excellence in higher education. They also demonstrate his courage in defense of these standards. The book is organized by decades from the 1940s through "1990s and Beyond." There is a general introduction to the collection and introductions to the letters of each decade. The last letter in the collection is dated August 14, 2001; Heilman died August 3, 2004 at age 98. The volume provides a chronology, a list of the major correspondents-- to include Theodore Roethke, Robert Penn Warren, Cleanth Brooks, Malcolm Cowley, Howard Nemerov, and a limited index. Selected letters from some of the correspondents are also included.

I note a new book on "Robert B. Heilman: His Life and letters" by Edward Alexander, Richard Dunn and Paul Jaussen, at $60.00 (or as low as $26.00 on Amazon). There was no mention of Eric Voegelin in the previw but, undoubtedly, he will appear somewhere in this book--or so I assume.
