April 16, 1999 <br><br>In February, a Committee
of the Convention on International Trade in
Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) agreed to
allow Namibia and Zimbabwe, Botswana to export 59.1
metric tonnes of government stockpiled ivory to Japan on
or after 18 March 1999. There is no indication yet
as to when the ivory will actually be exported.
Namibia auctioned its ivory stockpile to Japanese buyers
on April 9th; Zimbabwe's auction was held on April
13th; and Botswana's auction will be held on April
17th. All the purchased stockpiles will be exported to
Japan at the end of April.
