Dear Committee Members,
Happy New Year and thank you for your cooperation in
delaying the driveway conversation while we secured the
opening of Willy West. The recent decision by the City of
Madison’s Common Council to proceed with the Williamson
Street reconstruction project in April 2011 means that we're
all very close to what is expected to be an extensive and
challenging construction project.
To allow this committee to focus their energies
successfully, we have honed this list of our commitments
regarding the driveway's use before, during, and after
construction. Before our next meeting, we're hoping you'll
have time to review these and think of other criteria,
objectives or input you'd like us to consider around the
BEFORE CONSTRUCTION (March 14th, 2011–April 11th,
- In order to allow sufficient time to familiarize our
owners and neighbors to its use, we have targeted opening
the driveway on March 14th, 2011. The driveway will be
both an entrance and exit from opening through the
completion of the Willy Street reconstruction project.
- It is our intention to post a stop sign to instruct
vehicles to stop before reaching the sidewalk. The drive
lane will be limited to 5 miles per hour.
DURING CONSTRUCTION (April 12th, 2011–November ??,
2011, or actual end of construction)
- We will monitor pedestrian, bike and vehicular traffic
at both driveways, for overall improved safety and a
decrease in the number of crashes.
- The Co-op's parking lot will be made available for
neighboring businesses and/or residents during the
reconstruction project, though while our lot is being
resurfaced we may need to place some restrictions during
- We will continue to host an on-going driveway comment
period during construction. (www.willystreet.coop/update_about_project_install_driveway_jenifer_st)
- It is our intention to use the driveway as a right-turn,
exit-only for vehicle traffic for as long as 6 months
beyond the completion of construction in order to study
its impact post-construction before determining the
long-term use of the driveway.
- The Co-op will continue to monitor the driveway's impact
using the following tools:
- Independent traffic study
- City of Madison traffic reports
- Continue to host an on-going driveway comment period
for six months after end of construction
We propose meeting at 6:30pm on Tuesday, February 15th at
the office at 1882 E. Main Street. Please let us know if you
will be able to attend by Wednesday, February 2nd by
emailing us at
or calling (608) 237-1217 and we'll confirm this date with
everyone by February 3rd.
Thank you again and we look forward to continuing to serve
you during the long summer while Williamson Street goes
through a major transformation.
