See www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/whats-new/013-331-e.html where Library and Archives Canada indicate they are considering working together with The Generations Network (their websites include ancestry.ca, rootsweb.com and genealogy.com) to get the Canadian Censuses of 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1891 in both digital and searchable formats.
There are several assurances of the high quality of the work intended, the joint accessibility on the Canadian LAC and TGN websites, and that the access will be without fee. No additional joint projects are being considered at this time.
At present, ancestry.com houses at least some of several Canadian censuses (indexes and images) beneath a monthly ($30), quarterly ($112) or annual ($300) membership fee [1911 census, 1901 census, 1906 census, 1851 census and selected portions of 1861, 1881, 1891).
As LAC says, “This notice provides interested parties with an opportunity to comment on the proposed arrangement, including interest in similar projects”.
