Subject: [Arcan-l] CD-ROM resources available
I am pleased to announce that the Yarmouth County Museum & Archives, in partnership with Archive CD-Books Canada, has produced three CDs in pdf. format that are fully searchable.
- "A Compendium of the Shipping of Yarmouth , Nova Scotia , 1761-1902". For the first time a reprint of Lawson’s "Record of Yarmouth Shipping" is available to researchers. This CD comprises all three parts of the "Record" plus additional marine-related information from Brown’s " Yarmouth , Nova Scotia ". Also included is a small booklet published by the Yarmouth Times – "List of shipping owned in Yarmouth County , 31 December 1883". This work is a must for any researcher whose ancestors sailed on Yarmouth ’s sailing ships. The cover shows the original advertising artwork by John O’Brien from the museum’s collection. Price $40 + shipping.
- " Yarmouth , Nova Scotia " by George S. Brown was originally published in 1888. This is the sequel to Campbell ’s earlier history and covers the period of European settlement in Yarmouth County up to about 1885. This history is very detailed and gives much information on Yarmouth ’s first settlers. The appendices include several genealogies – particularly Acadian and Loyalist families. A photograph from the archives collection, that shows Main Street looking south as it appeared when the book was published, is on the cover. Price $23 + shipping.
3. " Yarmouth Past and Present" by J. Murray Lawson. This work was originally published in 1902. Two years ago, our society reprinted this rare history. Mr. Lawson was the son of Alexander Lawson, who published the "Yarmouth Herald" newspaper. Most of the material contained in this work came from the pages of that newspaper, covering the years from 1833 to 1900. The cover shows a watercolour sketch of Yarmouth , 1829 by Sarah B. Farish. Price $35 + shipping.
