Got this off of another list. Interesting reading. 10db improvement
over a built-in sound card! One of these things may make a BIG difference
receiving on HF. Is anyone using a RigExpert with the built-in sound card?
Comments? (Of course, they ain't cheap!)

As I said, in my search for sound card based devices that ARES could
use for digital EMCOMM purposes I have run very extensive testing of
many devices and radios...
As a result of my extensive bench testing of virtually every sound
card interface device I could get my hands on such as the MFJ 1279,
the Microham Keyer and the RigBlaster in parallel with the
RigExpert, each on a separate but identical computer but attached to
the same Radios (IC-756 Pro3, IC-2720, IC-706 MKIIG were tested), I
have observed that the RigExpert will decode signals in signal to
noise situations about 10 db better than ANY of the devices based on
the internal PC Sound Cards.. Which means that it will still give
you 100% copy when the internal Sound Card Devices no longer copy
anything. Plus the single USB Cable , Rig Interface Wire, and lack
of need for an external power supply made it ideal as a portable
package for EMCOMM. We have tested RigExpert with virtually all
common ham software and found that it worked.
As a result of Dave's comments, I went out and picked up a couple of
External USB SoundBlaster Sound Card boxes at Fry's this Morning.
I hooked them up to the the Microham, the RigBlaster and the MFJ-
1279 which I had handy on my test bench and connnected them to a IC-
756 Pro 3... Unlike the RigExpert with a single USB cable and an
interface cable to the rig, the External Sound Card configuration is
a very "messy" looking setup with lots of cables (sound in, Out,
The External Sound Card definitely improves the decoding ability of
these boxes [ roughly about 5db for the MFJ, 6db for the Microham
and the RigBlaster] over the internal Sound PC Card... ... BUT...
the RigExpert still beat them by about 4 db... Obviously there is
still some noise being introduced into the system by the conversion
from analogue to digital to analogue caused by the introduction of
the external sound card....
Conclusion: The RigExpert Package www.rigexpert.com is the most
effective for a sound card EMCOMM application.
FYI - I have no financial or other interest in Sound Blaster,
RigExpert, MicroHam, RigBlaster, MFJ or Icom. I just wanted our
ARES groups to standardize on the best and easiest to use sound card
interfaces for our EMCOMM applications.
